At Pear Tree Nursery we offer a variety of annual and perennial flowers that add beauty to yards and gardens. We’re often asked to help customers select flowers that grow well and fit nicely in their landscape. Many people ask what the difference is between annual and perennial flowers, so we’re going to provide an explanation.
Perennial Flowers
Perennial flowers continue to grow year after year. They go dormant over winter and will grow again in spring. Perennials tend to be easier to care for once they are planted because they come back year after year. They bloom for a limited amount of time, normally 4-6 weeks per year, so they provide lovely greenery throughout the season. Once perennials are established for a few years they can often be divided to make more flowers and spread to other gardens. On average perennials do tend to be more expensive than annuals, but they do continue to grow year after year.
Examples of Perennials Offered:
- Lilies
- Hostas
- Roses
- Ferns
- Phlox
Annual Flowers
Annual flowers only grow for one season. They normally are planted in the spring and summer, bloom and then die in the fall. Annuals provide colorful blooms from late spring throughout the entire summer. Because of this constant color and beauty annuals are often planted around perennials to add consistent color to the landscape. They are also commonly used in flower pots, hanging baskets, flower boxes and as border plants. Annuals tend to be less expensive than perennials since they only survive one growing season.
Examples of Annuals Offered:
- Petunias
- Marigolds
- Geraniums
- Pansies
- Impatiens
- Begonias
